European AI assistants compared
Facts checked on . Echto is in development: its column describes what we commit to, not a finished product.
The short answer
There are now several good European AI assistants. Mistral Vibe (formerly Le Chat) from France has the most assistant features, but trains on individual users' chats unless they opt out. Proton Lumo and Infomaniak Euria from Switzerland don't train on your chats, but offer few connections to your email or calendar. Echto, still in development, aims to combine both: an EU company with EU-only data, opt-in training and a real personal assistant for email and agenda.

What makes an AI assistant European?
"European" can mean four different things, and assistants differ on each: where the company is based, where your data is stored and processed, who operates the servers (a European provider or a US cloud company running European data centres), and where the AI models come from. A company based in the EU but running on US AI models, or a Swiss company outside the EU, can each be a reasonable choice, as long as you know which one you're getting.
Switzerland is not part of the EU, but the European Commission recognises its data protection as adequate, so personal data can flow there under the GDPR14.
Mistral Vibe (formerly Le Chat)
Mistral AI, based in Paris, renamed its Le Chat assistant to Mistral Vibe in May 202615. It's the most capable European assistant for everyday and work tasks, with memory, Gmail and Google Calendar connectors and multi-step agent tasks. Data is hosted in the EU by default2. The main caveat: individual users, including paying Pro subscribers, have their chats used for training unless they switch it off in their privacy settings3.
Proton Lumo
Lumo comes from Proton, the Swiss company behind Proton Mail. It doesn't train on your chats, keeps no logs and stores chat history with zero-access encryption6. It runs open-weight models and added memory and image generation in version 2.08. It's strong on privacy, but it is not yet a personal assistant that works with your email or calendar.
Infomaniak Euria
Euria runs entirely on Infomaniak's own infrastructure in Switzerland, with no external providers, and the waste heat from its data centre warms homes in Geneva910. It's free, doesn't use your data for training or ads, and integrates with Infomaniak's own mail and drive, but not with Gmail or Outlook.
Jarvis
Jarvis is a desktop assistant from a Romanian company that can see your screen and connect to more than 30 apps, with permissions per action11. It's open about its setup: user data is stored in the EU, but the application servers run in the US and the AI comes from US providers under no-training terms12.
Where Echto fits
Echto is being built to fill the gap between these options: a personal assistant for your email, agenda and everyday tasks, from an EU company, with data stored and processed only in the EU by European providers, training only when you opt in, and approval before every action. Echto is not available yet; the commitments above are what we're building towards, and we'll publish our full list of subprocessors before launch.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best European alternative to ChatGPT?
It depends on what you value. Mistral Vibe (formerly Le Chat) is the most capable European all-rounder. Proton Lumo and Infomaniak Euria are the strongest on privacy and don't train on your chats. Echto, in development, is a personal assistant for email and agenda that keeps all data in the EU.
What happened to Mistral Le Chat?
Mistral renamed Le Chat to Mistral Vibe in May 2026. It's the same assistant from the French company Mistral AI, now positioned as a work agent as well as a chat assistant.
Does Mistral train on my chats?
For individual users, including paid Pro plans, yes by default. Mistral says you can opt out in your privacy settings. Enterprise accounts are opted out by default.
Are Swiss AI assistants covered by the GDPR?
